National Business Women's Day: The Three Things That Define All Female Entrepreneurs

September 19, 2018

From the front page of The Times to your daily dose of Instagram the term ‘serial entrepreneur’ has quickly become everyone’s favorite job title. Side hustles are blooming, replacing nine-to-fives and our community of #girlbosses is continuing to grow. Women are more inspired than ever to go after their dreams, and we’re all for it! And while we wish we could say being an entrepreneur is a walk in the park, it does come with its challenges - especially when you tack on being a female in the entrepreneurial space. From crazy highs to frightening lows, you have to be ready for the ride of your life.

As a company that has the privilege of helping women launch and grow their business on a daily basis, we see first hand what an amazing community we’re a part of. And we’re not just talking about our Exec community: around the country and across the globe women are breaking boundaries, developing cures, and all around helping people live a more joyous life.

And with National Business Women’s Day coming up this Saturday, we thought what better way to celebrate, than by asking our Founder & CEO, Alice, the three things she believes define all female entrepreneurs - herself included!

1. They know their strengths and weaknesses.

“Great entrepreneurs strive to surround themselves with people smarter than they are! Showing up means being honest and understanding what it takes to get the job done. It also means acknowledging what they’re great at and then filling in the gaps from there...which often means asking for help!

Also, successful female entrepreneurs are aware of when being a woman works in their favor and when it might weaken their position in a situation. Being aware is 80% of the battle as it allows you to always be at the top of your game.”

2. They sell, sell, sell!

“At the end of the day, entrepreneurship is sales. You have to sell to customers, sell to investors, sell to potential employees… the selling never stops! Entrepreneurs set goals and they stick to them, if they miss a goal, selling or otherwise, they assess and strategize. A lot of what it takes to meet these goals has to do with selling your concept, your business, and yourself!"

3. They find their tribe and rely on them.

“Having a support system is key. Successful women surround themselves with other successful women who are doing similar things. Leaning on your friends and family for support is great, but they may not always understand the smaller day-to-day losses and victories that other women in the space can relate to.

I have a female CEO group that I totally depend on. This is a group of women I can talk to about how difficult hiring can be and brainstorm ideas, but it's also a group to talk to about how challenging entrepreneurship can be. From taking a toll on your family life, social life, hobbies, and more - the sacrifices of being an entrepreneur can be real. You need a crew that listens, supports, advises, and gives you a high five for pumping on a conference call with no one noticing!”
