This Girlboss' Search For Entrepreneurship Helped Her Land Her Dream JobJanuary 30, 2019
Ask any adult what they want to be when they grow up and we can almost guarantee the answer will be something to the effect of “I don’t know”. Successful CEO’s, retirees, and new graduates alike; we know what we love, we know what we hate, but the idea of figuring out what we want to do “forever” is daunting. Today women are more inspired than ever to create their dream jobs, and rightly so. And with that determination comes time (so much time) and a lot of hard work. Think of Sara Blakely - she was a fax machine (remember those?) salesperson for years before Spanx even became a reality.
But sometimes, if we push long enough, amongst all of the daydreaming and perseverance, we stumble across something that seems so close to our dream job that we fall absolutely in love. For Trish, the dream that became a reality was Alice’s Table. We’ve loved getting to know Trish over the past year - learning how she stays so positive, watching her grow her business, and hearing why she finally knows she’s found “the one”.
We love your story! You’re a mom to four kids, you launched your own floral design business, and now you’re are taking your business to the next level with Alice’s Table. Tell us more about what led you to join.
I have always had a strong passion for flowers and design. A few years ago I decided to take a design class at Longwood Gardens and give starting my own floral arranging business a go. Slowly, my business started to grow (mostly by word of mouth!) and so I was trying to figure out how I could grow with it. Almost like fate, my sister saw Alice’s Table on Shark Tank and told me that I had to look into the opportunity. So, I watched the episode and reached out to HQ the next day! My first event was March 2018, and the rest is history!
Your ambition is so admirable. You’ve (bravely!) tried out so many different opportunities. What has been your biggest challenge when launching a business?
Getting over the mindset of waiting for the right time to launch. There will never be the perfect time, and you will never be fully prepared. You just need to be passionate about what you are doing. If you love flowers and believe in everything AT stands for, it will show through at each class and you will be successful. There is a learning curve, and not every event will be a smashing success, but you will grow and learn with each event. Know that you will stumble along the way, but as a wise person once said, just fake it till you make it!
You know how to hustle! In the past year, you’ve hosted over 15 events and have an impressive line-up planned as we head into the spring. What has been one of your most rewarding moments so far?
For me, it’s not one specific moment, but the end of each class when we all gather to take a fun group photo. The look on everyone’s face as they hold their arrangements and truly feel proud of what they created is amazing. I really believe that an Alice’s Table event is an experience - learning a new skill, enjoying new and old friends, and creating a gorgeous floral arrangement to go home with.
You recently became a member to two amazing (and fellow Pennsylvania) Execs - congrats! How did you know that mentorship was the perfect fit for you?
I decided to become a mentor because I feel very confident in my new business and believe that I will continue to grow. I want to share my knowledge with others and encourage women of all ages to go for it. I know that together we can be better. There is so much business to go around and I wholeheartedly support community over competition.
Alright, now it’s time for a few fun rapid-fire questions...it’s 5 ‘o'clock, what your drink of choice?
Wine, always wine. Especially, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc!
You’re hosting a girls night at your house, what’s your best tip?
I love to use themes to make the evening memorable. Whether it’s a specific holiday or just a simple color scheme, I tie the flowers in with the food and cocktails. Also, never forget the candles!
It’s a beautiful Saturday, where can we find you?
Eating at one of the delicious spots nearby! Philly and it’s suburbs are home to some of the best restaurants, and of course, cheesesteaks!
Last but not least, what’s your favorite flower?
Ranunculus! Who isn’t obsessed with them?
